Rescuers suspend search for male in Red River

By Doug Barrett Apr 8, 2022 | 2:10 PM

Rescue efforts have been suspended for an individual who reportedly entered the Red River on Friday.

Law enforcement teams spent the past two days patrolling the river and its banks near downtown Grand Forks / East Grand Forks.  East Grand Forks Police Chief Mike Hedlund says they received an eyewitness report that a male was in the water shortly after 8:00 a.m.

The Grand Forks Sheriff’s Department says the individual was observed swimming west towards the North Dakota shoreline on the north side of the Sorlie (Demers) bridge.  Currently there no active missing person reports that match the information provided during the initial call.

Crews used sonar-equipped boats in a saturated search pattern of the area.  Periodic searches of the river are planned throughout the week.  Other agencies involved include East Grand Forks Police and Fire, Grand Forks Police and Fire, Altru Ambulance, Polk County Sheriff’s Office and Grand Forks County Sheriff Water Operations.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Grand Forks Sheriff’s Office at 701-780-8280.
