Supporters of a drive to force a vote on the proposed Fufeng project in Grand Forks dropped off boxes of petitions at city hall this morning.
The group needs 3,617 valid signatures to place the issue on the ballot. City Clerk Sherie Lundmark says she has no idea how many signatures were collected. The city now has 20 days to review the petition language and verify signatures.
A report will then be forwarded to the city council for action. Mayor Brandon Bochenski says he would prefer to see the question appear on the June ballot.
Critics of the corn milling plant say environmental issues…tax incentives…and the fact the company is based in China are reasons for concern.
In a Facebook post one organizer claims over 53-hundred signatures were collected.
