North Dakotans who still haven’t been vaccinated for COVID-19 probably never will be according to a survey by the UND Institute for Policy and Business Analytics.
In the fall of 2020 the group contacted 1,600 North Dakotans to assess attitudes and behaviors toward the pandemic. At that time many residents said they were suspicious about the state’s COVID recommendations. Around 300 of those participants were contacted for follow-up survey this past December – and 51 filled it out.
When the unvaccinated population was asked what might motivate them to get vaccinated, 80 percent chose the answer, “Nothing at this time.”
Some people who were extremely vaccine-hesitant on the original survey did eventually get the vaccine. Among the reasons they cited in the follow-up: Didn’t want COVID and I wanted my freedom back.
Jason Jensen is a political science professor and executive director of UND’s Institute for Policy and Business Analytics. Jensen says from a public health perspective the strong resistance to COVID-19 vaccination was discouraging.
