East Grand Forks is inching closer to adopting a new ward map in light of the recent U.S. Census count. The goal is to divide the total population of 9,176 into five equal wards.
The council is eyeing a map that would place council member Dale Helms and Tim Johnson in the same district. Mayor Steve Gander says in a perfect world he would prefer not to move members out of their respective wards.
Under the proposed plan population counts among the various wards would range between 1,824 and 1,847.
The council is expected to finalize the plan as soon as next week
