Fufeng debate resumes at GF council meeting

By Doug Barrett Mar 8, 2022 | 8:11 AM

The Grand Forks council approved a series of tax breaks last night to help bring a corn milling plant to the city’s north side.

As has been the case with past meetings numerous residents showed up to voice opposition to the project.  Critics have been vocal about Fufeng citing concerns about the environment and the company’s ties to China.  The debate at times during the meeting grew louder with opponents promising to circulate petitions to place the issue on the ballot.

Council member Bret Weber made the motion to approve the incentives suggesting the only complaints he has heard about Fufeng is the amount of raw water they will use…slave labor in China…and concerns about U.S. security.  “The idea that the security of the entire United States is a decision of seven council members from a city of less than 100,000….if that were the case we have a lot more to worry about that the development of a plant.”

At the end of the meeting Council President Dana Sande stated it was one of the most disappointing council meetings he’s been at adding it was emotional.  “People lose sight at how important economic development and growth of our community is for the betterment of all businesses – not just the seven businesses in Falconer Township.  I don’t want to do undue harm to them.  This is a significant opportunity.”

The incentive plan was approved on a 5-1 vote.
