Riverside Pool in north Grand Forks may be getting to the end of its life span.
Public Works Director Melanie Parvey says they ran some concrete testing of the basin and walls after pipes were found leaking below. “Because the pool was built in the 1940’s there has been damage over time. Any type of repair we make could be challenging and that would have to be replaced. Going forward we probably have 3-5 years before we aren’t able tp paint…repair…and patch it.”
In order to ready the pool for the upcoming season the city council has agreed to sandblast and paint the pool at a cost of $74,760 dollars.
Council President Dana Sande says some tough conversations may be to come. “Having that flood every year causes so many problems for the pool. I am not saying I want to take the pool out of Riverside Park. There must be a way to find a spot to have a nice north neighborhood pool that doesn’t flood.”
The city invested $1.3 million dollars into the facility in 2008. In addition the pool has been repainted in 2011…2014…and 2016.
