Grand Forks is looking at an ordinance regulating beekeeping in town. A proposed draft by the health department was given preliminary approval by the city council last night (Monday). The department says over the years they have fielded calls from concerned citizens about beekeeping.
Council member Bret Weber says if someone is acting irresponsible with the bees this would give the city an opportunity to address the situation. “There is a lot of confusion between wasps and bees and I have never been stung by a bee in my backyard but wasps will still come around the picnic table.”
Violators could lose their permit and be charged with public nuisance. City Attorney Dan Gaustad says he will seek clarification on the penalty provision before next week’s council meeting.
