GF hate crimes ordinance passes first test

By Doug Barrett Feb 23, 2022 | 7:56 AM

The Grand Forks council gave first reading last night (Tuesday) to a proposed hate crimes ordinance.  The draft is designed to address issues related to harassment… simple assault…and criminal mischief.

Council member Danny Weigel offered a suggestion about an enhancement penalty in order for the ordinance to be more effective.  Member Katie Dachtler says ideally the state should enact legislation to deal with these kinds of crimes.

Numerous people addressed the council both for and against the ordinance.

The council supported the measure on a unanimous vote.  Final approval is expected in two weeks.
