RRV deals with another blizzard system

By Doug Barrett Feb 11, 2022 | 9:13 AM

Another winter storm has caused travel problems up and down the Red River Valley.  The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning until 3:00 p.m. today.

Earlier this morning (Friday) the North Dakota Department of Transportation and North Dakota Highway Patrol closed Interstate 29 border to border.  As of this afternoon I-29 has reopened from Fargo to Grand Forks. Interstate 29 from Grand Forks to the Canadian border and Interstate 29 from Fargo to the South Dakota border remain closed.

The storm has caused many schools to start late or cancel classes. Both Grand Forks and East Grand Forks have the day off.  The University of North Dakota campus is closed until 500 p.m.  Northland and Mayville State University have cancelled classes.

Winds reached 55 mph at the Grand Forks Airport and in Warren.  Fargo clocked a peak gust at 54 mph while Cavalier and Crookston checked in at 52 mph. The NWS office in Grand Forks measured over three inches of new snow since Thursday morning – although some of that melted off during the day.

On a positive noted the long range 8-14 day outlook is calling for temps to trend above normal.
