Osterholm addresses COVID-19 immunity

By Doug Barrett Feb 4, 2022 | 8:01 AM

The Director of Infectious Disease at the University of Minnesota says the continued debate surrounding natural immunity from COVID-19 vs vaccination is not productive.

Dr. Michael Osterholm told a meeting of the House Health and Finance Committee that both kinds of immunity can play a role.  “I think a previous episode of documented COVID infection should count as at least one dose…but one dose isn’t nearly enough so vaccine is an important piece to this.”

Osterholm told lawmakers that the data on third doses against Omicron is compelling.  “I don’t think it should ever have been called a booster.  This should always have been a three dose vaccine.”

Osterholm says the data is universally driven – not just a recommendation from the C-D-C.

The committee is working on recommendations for how the state should respond to the ongoing pandemic.
