There’s still a lot of winter left but the National Weather Service has released its first spring flood outlook for 2022.
According to river watchers the risk for significant snowmelt flooding is moderately high – running near to slightly above long term historical averages across the Red River and Devils Lake Basins.
Since December 1st snowfall across the region runs from 90-130 percent of normal. It follows one of the driest years in 2021. Precipitation in the coming months and rate of thaw will play a major role in the spring flood potential.
The first outlook of the season pegs the 50-50 mark for a crest in Grand Forks / East Grand Forks at 42.9 feet.
