UND administrators say they have not ruled out the possibility of designating certain campus housing for LGBTQ students.
President Andrew Armacost addressed the issue during a one hour virtual meeting with students last night (Wednesday). The discussion was in response to last week’s decision to drop work on a gender inclusion policy on campus.
Armacost says more student engagement is needed on the housing front. “A wing…a dorm…or a floor. Is it the right step for the community? On one hand folks said it would be great to live with those who we identity. Others said the disadvantage is that it doesn’t show the rest of the campus who we are.”
According to UND staff there has been mixed results at other campuses where they have created “rainbow” or “pride” floors. It was noted that sometimes it works great and other times it can lead to isolation.
UND officials say the ultimate goal is for everyone to be comfortable in their housing assignment.
