Walz: Hennepin Co. Sheriff should resign

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan say Hennepin County Sheriff Dave Hutchinson should resign after his drunk driving arrest last month.

Authorities say Hutchinson’s blood alcohol content was nearly twice the legal limit when he crashed his county-owned SUV last month in Alexandria.

And investigators say the sheriff repeatedly denied that he was behind the wheel.

“I think most Minnesotans know and understand that there are consequences for decisions like that,” Walz said. “I just wish that (Hutchinson) gets the help that he needs to move on with his life.”

The statements from Walz and Flanagan on Thursday came after several news outlets reported that, according to the Minnesota State Patrol, Hutchinson was driving 126 miles per hour on I-94, and was not wearing a seat belt.

Several Hennepin County officials have also called for Hutchinson to resign.
