GF schools look to change athletic oversight

The Grand Forks School District is one step closer to a restructuring of how it manages its athletic programs.

The district is looking to eliminate a districtwide athletics director position in favor of two high school A-D’s.  In addition a new activities director position would be created.

Although no board members spoke out against the concept itself several expressed concerns that the move will actually cost the district more money.  One staff estimate puts the figure at just shy of $22,000 dollars.

Board member Cynthia Shabb questioned where the extra cash would come from.  “What I worry is that the district is going to be coming back and say all right…now we have this $22,000 to athletics…so we now have to find $22,000 to reduce in another area.”

Superintendent Terry Brenner says the numbers are only estimates and will not mean cuts to other programs.  “The numbers are median average ranges to they could be lower…or they could be higher…depending upon the people selected for those positions.”

The district hopes to start the process of advertising the jobs  later this month.
