ND anglers urged to monitor changing ice conditions

By Doug Barrett Dec 20, 2021 | 7:56 AM

With temps turning colder more and more anglers are venturing out on lakes and streams.
Ice fishing is popular in North Dakota with an estimated 25% of license holders participating in the winter sport.

Drought conditions lowered many lakes by 2 to 5 feet during the summer – but Game and Fish officials say fish populations are still in good shape.
Outreach Biologist Jim Jobe says knowing how to judge ice conditions will result in more informed decisions and reduce the risk of falling though the ice.
A general rule of thumb for ice is four inches for walking….six for an ATV….8-12 for a car…and 12-15 inches of good ice for a medium sized pickup truck.

Game and Fish will offer a license “free” fishing weekend for resident anglers only on December 25th & 26th.
