UMN Crookston holds session to discuss Kiehle Auditorium murals

By Doug Barrett Dec 10, 2021 | 11:38 AM

The University of Minnesota Crookston is trying to decide what to do with a series of murals on displayed at the Kiehl Auditorium.

Chancellor Mary Holz-Clause says there are no plans to permanently destroy the murals but rather acknowledge that the content of the art is inconsistent with campus values.

The murals were created by John Martin Socha, a native Minnesotan and a graduate of the University of Minnesota.  Socha was commissioned to paint the murals as part of the United States Federal Art Project and the larger Works Progress Administration initiative (1935-43).

Critics argue that elements of the paintings reflect painful events in Native American history interpreted through the lens of a dominant culture.

No decisions were made at a public forum last night (Thursday).
