Snow turns Red River Valley white

As forecast a winter storm gave much of the region a fresh blanket of snow.

The snow will taper off and gradually end thru the afternoon and evening. The focus will shift to a period of strong north-northwest winds with gusts over 40 mph tonight. Look for blowing snow and reduced visibilities in northeastern North Dakota and the Red River valley this evening into part of the overnight.

By Monday morning conditions should improved. A period of near blizzard conditions are possible this evening in the highlighted area on the map.

As of noon the National Weather Service office in Grand Forks had measured 7.3 inches of snow.  The snow resulted in slippery driving conditions up and down the Red River Valley with numerous cars sliding off the road or getting stuck.  The weather has also prompted a number of Sunday closings.  Here is a partial list:

GF Library (closed)

Empire Arts Holiday Show (cancelled)

Mendenhall Church (cancelled)

Hope Church (6:00 pm online only)

Climax-Shelly (Monday school & buses 2 hours late)

East Forks Schools (Monday 2 hours late)

All Grand Forks Public and Grand Forks Air Force Base Schools will start two hours late tomorrow, Monday, December 6. Start times are:
10:00 a.m. High School and Head Start (doors open at 9:50 a.m.)
10:25 a.m. Elementary (doors open at 10:15 a.m.)
10:40 a.m. Middle School (doors open at 10:30 a.m.)

Buses will run two hours late. There will be no Early Childhood Special Education classes, breakfast, or morning activities.

The University of North Dakota in  Grand Forks will close at 9 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 5 and re-open at 10 a.m., Monday, Dec. 6. UND will continue to monitor weather conditions and update as necessary. Essential personnel should report to work as scheduled.

Grand Forks Public Health’s COVID-19 testing event, scheduled to take place from tomorrow, December 6, 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at University of North Dakota’s (UND) Fritz Pollard Jr. Athletic Center, will be closed tomorrow due to inclement weather. COVID-19 will resume at UND’s Fritz Pollard Jr. Athletic Center Tuesday, December 7, 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
