UND not ready to ditch mask mandate

By Doug Barrett Dec 3, 2021 | 8:54 AM

There is still no date for ending the mask mandate on the University of North Dakota campus.

UND President Andy Armacost says he’s in favor of anything that increases compliance of mask use – including increased signage.  Armacost told a faculty town hall meeting (Thursday) that he’s aware of some instances where masks are not being worn at all times.  “It allows us to keep courses running.”

Vice President Jed Shivers says he hopes he’s wrong but he fears transmission rates will get worse heading into winter.  “The only way we will blunt that is with vaccination and mask wearing.”

UND leaders say the CDC threshold for masks is 50 cases per 100-thousand – and right now the Grand Forks region is four to five times that level.

Armacost says the best way to lower the number is to get vaccinated and wear masks.
