GF eyes new redistricting plan

By Doug Barrett Nov 9, 2021 | 9:19 AM

The Grand Forks council gave preliminary approval to a map that redraws ward lines in light of the recent U.S. Census count.

Members looked at a new proposal last night dubbed Ponderosa after three previous drafts designed to balance population displaced at least one current council member.

The ideal goal is to leave each ward with a headcount of 8,453.  The latest version shows a deviation from largest to smallest of just 453 people.

City Attorney Dan Gaustad says that likely falls within an officials ten-percent plus or minus range.

The Ponderosa option also keeps Council member Bret Weber in Ward 3.  Weber says his home address shouldn’t be an issue in the debate.

The council could make minor changes to the remapping process with final approval expected before the end of the year.
