US Energy Secy. praises ND efforts toward carbon neutrality

By Pat Sweeney Oct 14, 2021 | 4:26 PM

U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm joined Sen. John Hoeven and Gov. Doug Burgum in Grand Forks today (Thu) for a roundtable with energy stakeholders.

They discussed North Dakota’s “all-of-the-above approach” to energy development… as well as efforts to crack the code on carbon capture, utilization and storage technologies.

Granholm said North Dakota has an advantage in carbon capture and storage because of its geology…and complimented Burgum on the state’s efforts.

“To be able to say you’re going to be a state that is putting its stake in the ground for zero carbon, when you have such a fossil fuel history, is really courageous and it’s great leadership. It means you’re going to invest in the technology that it takes to get there, as a goal,” Granholm said.

Burgum wants to make North Dakota a carbon-neutral state by 2030.

Granholm says there will be a $23 trillion global market for products that reduce carbon pollution by 2030.

“We up to this point as a nation have allowed other countries to seize that market. President Biden has said no more. We want those products and supply chains made here in America, and that’s a huge economic opportunity for us, but’s it’s also an opportunity for us to be a very significant contributor to reducing climate change,” Granholm said.

The roundtable was held at UND’s Energy and Environmental Research Center.
