New Test Data Shows Pandemic Learning Decline in ND

By Doug Barrett Oct 8, 2021 | 8:28 AM

New test data shows a decline in North Dakota student math and English proficiency during the 2020-21 school year.  The results offer evidence about how the COVID-19 pandemic affected student learning in the state.

The North Dakota State Assessment in English/Language Arts and Mathematics is given annually to students in grades three through eight – and to students in the 10th grade.  During the 2021 spring tests the percentage of all students who scored as “proficient” or “advanced” in English/Language Arts was 42% – a 5% decline from the spring of 2019.  Math scores fell 7%.

State Superintendent Kirsten Baesler says the decline is significant and a challenge to all educators.  Beasler says fortunately schools have been provided unprecedented resources to use in reversing these trends.  “We have experienced significant loss, and we now are presented with an opportunity to make a significant comeback.”

The data shows the Grand Forks School District with a 49% proficiency in ELA and 38% for math.
