NTSB still looking into fatal Amtrak crash

By Doug Barrett Sep 28, 2021 | 8:11 AM

The National Transportation Safety Board is trying to figure out what may have contributed to Saturday’s fatal Amtrak train derailment in northern Montana. Federal investigators are looking into a number of potential factors.

Everything from weather – which was pleasant that day – to human factor or debris on the railroad. The NTSB is also examining is a switch – where they go from one track to two tracks but officials note the derailment happened apparently just before that switch
The train was also traveling under the speed limit at about 75 mph when it jumped the tracks. That stretch of track had been inspected just days before the crash. The Empire Builder is the same route that makes a stop in Grand Forks.
