Xcel Energy has filed for an increase on the base rate charged to natural gas customers in North Dakota.
It would be raised from the current $18.48 a month to $24.48. Xcel doesn’t make any profit on the actual natural gas – that’s a pass-through cost to consumers from the gas producers.
But this comes on the heels of those natural gas costs – which spiked due to the February cold spell in Texas and other southwestern states.
In a statement, Xcel said it has not asked for a natural gas rate increase since 2007. Xcel also said even with the rate increase, the gas bills will still be among the lowest in the region.
North Dakota Public Service Commission Brian Kroshus was critical for the timing of the request.
Under state law Xcel is allowed an interim rate increase – which has not yet been determined.
