Grand Forks health officials say they have seen a steady drop in vaccinations for COVID-19 in recent weeks. Right before the start of the school year over 800 residents got jabbed. Last week the number dropped to 367.
The health department’s Michael Dulitz says in terms of raw numbers the 19-29 year crowd has received the most vaccinations to date – but they also make of the largest share of the population. “We have been engaging with UND on how they can work to get people better vaccinated and they have put together a vaccine incentive program.”
Dulitz admits there has been discussions about adjusting the coverage rate of 60% to achieve so-called herd immunity because of the Delta variant – but they also don’t want to create the appearance of trying to move the goal posts. “With any type of vaccination we see decreases overall in case counts…so it gives us some hope.”
A community vaccination event is planned in Grand Forks today (Wednesday) at the Alerus Center. The city will offer a $50 e-gift card to those receiving their first shot as an incentive. The event runs noon to 7:00 p.m.
