EGF K-6 students need to mask up

By Doug Barrett Sep 14, 2021 | 8:28 AM

The East Grand Forks School Board has moved the district from a Level 2 to a Level 3 on the COVID Safe Learning Plan.  The move mandates masks for students in grades K-6 for all indoor settings.  A notice detailing the changes will go out to parents today (Tuesday).

Superintendent Mike Kolness says during the first four days of the school year there have been 16 students testing positive for COVID-19.  “We don’t want kids to quarantine either.  I think this is a way to prevent students from staying home.  I know it’s not popular and there are some strong opinions on both sides but we definitely have positive cases.”

Kolness says he hopes the masking requirement is a short term requirement.

The change will go into effect on September 16.  The board approved the change on a unanimous vote.

In other district news first week school enrollment came in at 2,063 K-12 students.  Last year enrollment dipped to as low as 1,853.
