GFK boardings slowly ramping back up

By Doug Barrett Aug 30, 2021 | 8:49 AM

While passenger traffic has been climbing at the Grand Forks Airport in 2021 the growth in boardings has not been as great as other major airports in the state.

In July 5,913 people passed through the gates of the GFK – or down over 38% compared to the pre-pandemic 2019 year.  By comparison Fargo was off just over 1%…Bismarck was down 23%…and Minot was a minus 17%.

At a recent Airport Authority Commission meeting GFK Director Ryan Reisinger says having the Canadian border closed is just one of the factors holding back traffic.  “We have Delta and Allegiant.  The other airports have United and American if not others.  Until May 1st Delta was restricting capacity while American and United were not.”

Reisinger says if you examine just the last three months the percentage increase in boardings for Grand Forks is higher than the other major airports in the state.

North Dakota’s eight commercial service airports posted a total of 92,922 airline passenger boardings during the month of July – the highest level of passenger traffic since the Covid-19 pandemic began.
