Ceremony closes West School in north Grand Forks

By Doug Barrett Aug 19, 2021 | 8:24 AM

Former students…faculty…and staff gathered at West School last night to celebrate the history of the district’s oldest elementary school.  The Grand Forks School Board has voted to permanently close West due to escalating maintenance needs…mold…and air quality issues.

School officials are in the process of trying to sell the building and land.  The deadline to respond to the Request for Proposals is September 7th.

Superintendent Terry Brenner says there has been interest.  “There are at least two very interested parties – probably more so in the land than the building itself.’

Brenner says it’s his hope the site is developed into single family homes. “Both are looking at single family homes or twin homes.  We believe there is probably nine lots on this site for single family homes.”

Those attending the neighborhood gathering shared stories…memories…and history of the building.

A site visit for developers interested in buying the shuttered school is set for August 31st.
