North Dakota K-12 schools kick-off another year in the coming weeks and concern about COVID-19 is still impacting classrooms. Many districts are wrestling with policies over masks and social distancing with the Delta variant taking center stage.
At a recent North Dakota Health Department town hall meeting Dr. Tracie Norman made the case for vaccinating eligible age students as the best measure of protection. Norman says contrary to some beliefs COVID can make kids really sick. “We do know they are at high risk of serious illnesses and long term health issues. COVID-19 is now classified in the top 10 causes of death of U.S. adolescents.”
North Dakota’s State Health Officer says his department stands ready to give local schools some guidance in dealing with COVID-19 related issues. State Health Officer Dr. Nizar Wehbi says it will be up to local schools to make decisions on protocols. “We want to make sure they are empowered to make their own decisions. We are here to help and support and provide data and information.”
The Grand Forks School Board will talk about recommended mask use when they meet tonight (Monday).
