A few last minute changes are being made to a grant application by East Grand Forks to the Greater Minnesota Parks and Trails Commission. The city is looking to scrap plans for a $453,000 dollar south side trail addition after several nearby homeowners balked at the idea.
Still included in the grant “ask” are boat ramps at LaFave Park and a mill and overlay of the existing 1st Street NW. The grant would cover 75% of the bill.
Parks Superintendent Reid Huttunen says he supports the move.
Removing the trail puts the funding request out of compliance with the grant criteria but Huttunen says they can remedy that before submitting the application. “A few things in the LaFave master plan a few years ago include a natural playground that would be a 60-70 thousand dollars line item right there and bring the entire grant application into compliance.”
The grant request exceeds $1.1 million dollars and requires a 25% local match. The deadline to apply is July 31st.
