Quick heavy downpours not necessarily a good thing

By Doug Barrett Jul 19, 2021 | 7:31 AM

Heavy rains recorded late last week near Larimore and Minot are not exactly the million-dollar rains being sought by ag-producers around the state. Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says the heavy torrential rains may do more harm than good.  “If you have exposed soil you tend to have more soil erosion.  It’s not a good scenario.”

Goehring says in order to recharge the soil profile it will take several inches of rain spread out over a number of days.

The latest drought monitor lists Grand Forks County in a Severe Drought status.
