After tossing out a couple of surveys – and putting the contract out for bid – the Grand Forks council is not recommending any changes in the current recycling program.
City Administrator Todd Feland says both an online and scientific survey suggests residents are generally satisfied with the current curbside recycling and garbage collection program.
Feland says although it’s only a small part of the trash collection strategy – recycling does help with securing permits from the state in operating the landfill. “We are up for another 5 year landfill permit upgrade. One of the criteria we have is we will do the best we can with a goal of trying to divert 40% from our solid waste landfill to preserve capacity.”
The current single family residential cost would remain at $3.35 per month… multi-family costs would drop slightly…and the cost for drop-off sites will also decrease.
Council President Dana Sande says he was pleasantly surprised with the bid results. “I was anticipating a significant escalation in cost.”
Waste Management would continue to provide the service as part of a five-year agreement. Final approval of the contract is expected next week.
