With time ticking down this legislative session efforts to legalize recreational marijuana in Minnesota advanced out of another House committee this week.
The House Tax Committee sent House File 600 to the Ways and Means Committee on a 12-6 vote.
Bill sponsor Representative Ryan Winkler says Minnesotans across the state support legalization.
Winkler adds the goal is to shift users away from an illegal market where people do not know what they are buying. “The goal in the taxes on this bill is to keep them low. It is to make sure there is no barrier in migrating from an illegal marketplace to a regulated marketplace.”
Even if the bill passes the House it faces a stiff challenge from the Republican-controlled Senate.
