ND committee takes foot off gas tax increase

By Doug Barrett Mar 25, 2021 | 8:21 AM

A Senate committee has put a speed bump in the way of a bill designed to raise North Dakota’s gas tax by three cents per gallon.  The Finance and Taxation committee voted four to three in favor of a DO NOT PASS recommendation on House Bill 14-64.  The bill would have increased the annual fees for electric cars…hybrid…and electric motorcycles.

In testimony this week Representative Vicky Steiner says the state is losing out on some much needed dollars to pay for roads and bridge improvements.

By comparison the gas tax rate in Minnesota is 28.6 cents…..30 cents in South Dakota…and 32.75 in Montana.  The recommendation goes to the Senate floor.  The House has already approved the bill.
