EGF getting close to building consensus on road construction

By Doug Barrett Mar 24, 2021 | 8:44 AM

East Grand Forks officials could decide in April which road to take when it comes to using federal highway funding during the 2022 construction season.

Right now the long range transportation plan lists the Bygland Road roundabout as the preferred option.  The council is considering moving the 10th Street Northeast reconstruction to the top of the list.  The city anticipates receiving $860 thousand dollars to fund just one of the projects.

During a work session last night (Tuesday) council member Dale Helms suggested the city try stop signs at the Bygland intersection to see if that improves traffic flow until the roundabout is built.  Mayor Steve Gander says that’s been tried before and without success.  “The traffic in that end of town has only increased since then as more homes have been built.  It was unacceptable when it was tried before.”

The cost of the projects range from $1.6 million to $2.29 million dollars.  The council is looking at an early 2022 bid date.
