With a wrecking ball waiting in the wings the University of North Dakota will pay tribute to the old Memorial Stadium next week.
The 1927 structure is scheduled to be razed later this month to make way for a brand new $25 million dollar building. The first floor of the complex will house UND Athletics with the remaining four floors market rent apartments.
Last month the city gave final approval to a tax incentive plan to help pave the way for the project. On Wednesday the Grand Forks Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval of the plat and amended zoning needed for construction.
University leaders are planning a live stream event on Tuesday to highlight the stadiums role in the community. As part of the “recognition” UND will open a time capsule which was discovered by a work crew in the stadium’s cornerstone. The event will reveal the contents placed from a time when Thomas Kane was president of UND.
The stadium held its first actual football game in 1928.
