A Detroit Lakes (MN) restaurant has agreed to pay $14,695 dollars in back wages for workers who contributed to illegal tip pools.
The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry reports TBCT Management – doing business as Spitfire Bar and Grill – required employees to contribute tips to a fund that was distributed to other workers. TBCT agreed to resolve the matter and pay back 52 employees who each received an average of $282 in back wages.
Minnesota law prohibits employers to require employees to share their tips with indirect-service employees – such as bussers, dishwashers, cooks and hosts.
