Grand Forks alcohol & games of chance

By Doug Barrett Mar 2, 2021 | 8:19 AM

The Grand Forks council rejected a move to allow restaurants with a Class 4 liquor license to host games of chance.

Supporters say not-for-profits are having a hard time raising money due to the lack of available gaming sites.  Critics claim opening gaming to restaurants would grant easier access to minors.

Mayor Brandon Bochenski says ultimately it’s a council decision.

City Attorney Dan Gaustad says as written the games would be limited to designated areas within the establishment.  “The way the Class-4 sets up right now is that there is a designated area of 800 square feet that minors are not to be allowed – everyone takes a risk for violating the law.”

The council rejected the request on a 5-2 vote but could reconsider the issue following a pending review of all city alcohol policies.  That review is tentatively scheduled to come before the council at a March 30th meeting.
