North Dakota has taken a step towards annual sessions…but it’s a small step. The Senate this week agreed to a one-time session in 2022. The original bill called for the Legislature to meet annually instead of every other year. Republican Senator Brad Bekkedahl says he decided to add a “sunset” clause after consulting with some of his colleagues. Bekkedahl says with so many unknowsns about COVID and the budget it will be important to meet next year.
The 80 day limit for lawmakers to meet over the two year period remains in effect.
The Senate approved the amended bill by a 28-19 vote. It still needs to be reviewed by the House.
