GF schools cost vs savings chart

The size of a potential bond referendum is still in question but there is general consensus among Grand Forks school board members to include a Valley Middle School replacement project and consolidation of three elementary schools in the discussion.

The board held a work session (Monday) to further review the findings of a facilities task force that recommends consolidation…new buildings…mergers…and a building fund mill bump in light of budget woes and building needs.

Consultant Tom Weber of SitelogIQ says a preliminary estimate for a new Valley… West…Wilder…and Winship school complex tops $70 million dollars.

A proposed Ben Franklin-Lewis & Clark merger plus a Kelly-Viking update could cost another $58 million dollars.  Weber says that’s a lot of money – but there is value in the “ask”.

The cost savings to the district through deferred maintenance on the various consolidations and moves is projected to top $103 million dollars.   A community survey is in the works.  No formal action has been taken by the board.
