The North Dakota House has rejected an attempt to bump the fine for driving on a closed road from 250 to 500 dollars. Supporters say those who venture out during blizzard conditions often put emergency workers at risk when they get stuck. Representative Bernie Satrom says it’s time to send a message that when a road is closed…it’s closed.
Representative Dan Ruby says the bill doesn’t address motorists who are already on the road when it’s closed. Ruby says the size of the penalty is also a concern and may deter law enforcement from witing a ticket.
The bill failed on a 61-32 vote.
