The future of the long awaited Northern Plains Nitrogen plant could be known before the end of the year.
N-P-N’s Larry Mackie appeared before the Grand Forks council last night (Monday) to request another six month extension on a Letter of Intent to build the fertilizer plant west of the city. The one-and-a-half billion dollar project was first proposed in 2013.
Mackie says he’s close to securing the needed investors to grow the operation. Mackie says the unnamed group is putting together a draft letter of support.
The goal is to tap water from the city’s sewage lagoon to produce nitrogen fertilizer. Most of the state permits and regulatory issues have been secured.
The council gave preliminary approval to the extension – final approval is expected next week.
