(KNOX) -The Grand Forks City Council was updated on the proposed Children’s Museum and Altru Indoor Sports and Aquatics Center during a special meeting Monday evening.

Grand Forks City Administrator Todd Feland said that the city signed on to the project during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“And all the things we were going through at the time, we took this project on, not knowing what the end was,” Feland told the council. “The City of Grand Forks has taken more and more ownership, as we have the where with all to continue on”

Grand Forks Mayor Brandon Bochenski said that the proposed Children’s Museum and Altru Indoor Sports and Aquatics Center have been a long time in the making.

“How important and how incredible it is that we have these two projects coming before the community today. Just couldn’t be more grateful for the work that has got into it to get to this point,” said Bochenski.

In January 2024, the City of Grand Forks hired the design team of JLG Architects and Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture (JLG + BRS) for final programming and schematic design of the new facility. From the beginning of schematic design, user group input was a critical component to finalizing the program for the facility.

The JLG + BRS Team was charged with working with the City, Parks District, Steering Committee Members, and Indirect Stakeholders to confirm the results of the feasibility study and build upon new local developments around local athletics.

Major components of the overall facility were established during the feasibility study phase but within the two-years of completing the study, the priorities of the community changed, including the existing services that will be offered to the public elsewhere.

The Altru Indoor Sports and Aquatics Center will be located on a 15-acre plot owned by the City of Grand Forks south of the Alerus Center.
