Minnesota House Bill seeks to protect ‘kidfluencers’

(KNOX) – “Kidfluencers” are the target of legal protection from the Minnesota House.

More and more kids are producing content for YouTube and Tik Tok…but they have no legal right to the money generated by their content.

The Minnesota House bill, if passed, would prohibit minors under the age of 14 from creating video content platforms for money.

Compensation paid to minors from 14 to 18 years of age would be placed in a trust accessible when they turn 18.

Representative Zach Stephenson, author of the bill, says careers in social media are becoming increasingly common, with the industry worth an estimated $250 billion.

Last year, Illinois became the first state to pass a law establishing protections for kidfluencers, requiring a percentage of any earnings from online content- which includes a minor’s likeness- to go into a trust for the minor once they reach adulthood. At least six other states have introduced similar bills in 2024.
