(KNOX) – Seat belts saved the lives of three people who had a harrowing experience Monday morning in Bismarck… when a black Ford Expedition crashed and overturned on the Grant Marsh Bridge in the construction zone.
The Highway Patrol says the Expedition was traveling east across the bridge.
A vehicle ahead of the Expedition slowed suddenly.
The driver of the Expedition applied the brakes and steered to the right, striking the orange barrels protecting the bridge rail. About 6 barrels were damaged.
The Expedition also struck the bridge rail… then overturned onto its roof and slid on the roadway.
It was struck from behind by an eastbound 2013 Lincoln SUV as it overturned.
A 2024 Nissan Armada was in the oncoming lane and contacted the Expedition. There was minor damage to the Lincoln and the Nissan.
All occupants were wearing seat belts. There were no injuries.
Interstate 94 was closed in both directions at the Grant Marsh Bridge for about an hour, reopening at 9:15am.
The Highway Patrol would like to remind motorists to slow down, stay alert, and watch for workers – your caution ensures everyone’s safety in construction zones… and be mindful of your following distance.
