GF eyeing new traffic signals

Around a dozen intersections throughout Grand Forks are slated to get new or revamped traffic signals starting this year.

The city council gave preliminary approval last night (Monday) to a cost participation agreement with the North Dakota DOT on the program that will focus on the Gateway Drive…South Washington…and DeMers Avenue corridors. The cost of the plan is estimated at some $6.6 million dollars.

Assistant City Engineer David Kuharenko says the signal are starting to show some age.  “Withnthe long lead times associated with replacing signals you are looking at 6 to 9 months.  We are looking to rehab the signals along DeMers this year and replacing the other signals in 2025.”

Kuharenko says the average lifespan of a signal is around 30 years – and some of the traffic lights are in the 50 plus range.

The local share of the project is estimated at some $283,000. A bid opening date is set for April 12th.

The list of signals currently proposed to be replaced with this project include:
• Gateway Dr & N 47th St
• Gateway Dr & West I-29 Ramp
• Gateway Dr & East I-29 Ramp
• Gateway Dr & N 20th St
• Gateway Dr & N 3rd St/11th Ave N
• S Washington St & 13th Ave S
• S Washington St & 32nd Ave S

The list of signals currently proposed to be rehabilitated include:
• Demers Ave and S 34th St
• Demers Ave & North Bound Columbia Rd Ramp
• Demers Ave & S 20th St
• Demers Ave & Washington St
• Demers Ave & Fire Station 1
