Large crowd addresses GF School budget plan

By Doug Barrett Feb 27, 2024 | 9:29 AM

For nearly four hours the Grand Forks School Board listened to pleas to save programs that may be altered to help the district achieve a 15% general fund balance moving forward.

Parents…students…and staff filled the board room last night (Monday) to voice concerns over proposals that would phase out the German program over three years…refine music education…and right size teaching positions.

School Superintendent Terry Brenner says no staff cuts are being planned.  “Anyone who believes we are padding the budget does not understand the reality and complexities of our budget.”

Following the public comment period board members said the conversations will continue. One member suggested the district delay its goal of a 15% reserve for another year or two to soften the cuts.

Final budget approval won’t occur until October.
