A 40-year sentence was handed down to the man convicted in the 2021 murder of Ricky Balsimo.
Jacob Johnson was accused of shooting Balsimo in St. Paul during a dispute. Following the shooting Johnson transported the body to Superior (WI) where with the help of an accomplice dismembered Balsimo and placed his body parts in totes where they were dumped into Lake Superior.
Two other defendants in the case have already been convicted and sentenced.
Attorney General Keith Ellison’s office prosecuted the case upon the request of the Cook County Attorney.
The presumptive sentence in this case for intentional 2nd-degree murder under the Minnesota sentencing guidelines was 366 months, but the State asked for the statutory maximum of 480 months based on aggravating factors that included Johnson’s dismembering and concealing of the body.
