MN train derailment prompts evacuations (Update)

Update 12:00 PM from Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office:

The evacuation order for Raymond has been lifted. Residents may return safely to their homes. There will be road detours in the area around the site.
There is no impact to groundwater. Local responders and BNSF personnel continue to work to mitigate the incident.
Residents and businesses impacted by the incident can contact 866-243-4784 for assistance.
The main track is blocked and an estimated time for reopening the line is not yet available. The cause of the incident is under investigation.

Residents within a half mile of a train crash in Minnesota’s Kandiyohi County were evacuated early this morning (Thursday). As many as 22 cars of a BNSF train jumped the tracks in Raymond (MN) around 1:00 a.m.

The Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Department says several of the tankers carrying ethanol and a corn syrup liquid caught fire. Residents who had nowhere to go were housed at an emergency shelter in nearby Prinsburg (MN).

Authorities say there have been no injuries. BNSF officials are on the scene. Highway 23 which runs through Raymond has been closed in both directions.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the cause of the derailment.
