GF council reviews CFIUS ruling

By Doug Barrett Dec 20, 2022 | 7:58 AM

After taking a few weeks off from any discussion about the proposed Fufeng project the Grand Forks council received a briefing last night (Monday) on the findings by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. That ruling by CFIUS stated they had no jurisdiction over the much debated corn milling plant.

Security concerns over the company’s ties to China and its close proximity to the Grand Forks Air Force Base have been a topic of talk since the project was first announced.

City council member Ken Vien says in addition to looking at water needs…and environmental issues – the city needs to consider how it might impact its relationship with the GFAFB if it moves forward.

Bridget Reineking is with the Cooley Law firm which was hired by the city to assist with the CFIUS review. She says the local base has not come out against the transaction and they must have been involved in the risk assessment in some fashion. Reineking says their absence in articulating concern is meaningful.

Both of North Dakota’s U.S. Senators have been opposed to locating the plant in north Grand Forks – although admitting it’s a local call. Cramer has requested a top secret briefing with the Treasury Department and U.S. Air Force to learn more about what they learned during the review process.
