Cramer says opposition to Fufeng is not new

By Doug Barrett Dec 1, 2022 | 12:56 PM

U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer says his opposition to the Fufeng project was known long before the review by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States.

Cramer says he was happy to support the request by the City of Grand Forks for the analysis.  Cramer says while the CFIUS study will be useful – it’s not a definitive report.

Cramer’s says he first expressed his concerns about the company’s ties to China sometime last year.  He discussed the opposition timing as a guest on KNOX’s “Critical Thought” program today (Thursday).  “The question for Fufeng in going forward is do we want the Air Force to mitigate risks or do we want to minimize risks.  I would rather minimize those risks and make Grand Forks the most defense-military friendly city in America to grow missions at the Grand Forks Air Force Base.”

It was back in October that KNOX News first reported that city officials had received emails from North Dakota’s two U.S Senators urging rejection of the corn milling plant.

In response to those reports U.S. Senator John Hoeven told KNOX that he had urged a drone manufacturing company at Grand Sky to express concerns about the project to city leadership.  Hoeven said he based his opinion on what he picked up from briefings from government agencies…military…and people in the defense industry.

The CFIUS review is expected to be ready by December 12th.  Cramer says President Biden has authority after 15 days to stop the project due to security concerns.
